Classics 3 - Phat Mod Overdrive

The legendary Blues Driver, just tweaked to sound perfect.

The Slightly Technical ToneX captures are tone models of gear from my personal collection. These amplifiers and pedals are not commercially available and are either original designs, designs inspired by famous units, or uniquely modified pieces of equipment. Each piece of gear was crafted with carefully selected components, meticulously measured, and calibrated to achieve the desired tonal qualities.

When you have a pedal that doesn’t sound great—mod it! The Phat Mod Overdrive is my take on the legendary Boss Blues Driver circuit, featuring a selection of mods and tweaks to voice the circuit to my liking. The Blues Driver is a rather polarizing pedal—some settings sound great, but many people dislike the 'fizz' at higher gain levels. Keeley was known for a popular mod to these, but I don’t really remember the exact mods I did to this one. I just remember selecting some FETs from my NOS collection and tweaking the circuit until I loved it.

It was built on an Aion FX PCB, which provided a great platform for implementing the modded circuit. This pedal can do everything from light boost sounds to blown-out distortion, and it sounds amazing at all settings. Some people call it full-range or 'open'—I don’t know, it just always works so well. It just does the job.

This collection includes 10 different Tone Models. This unit has a very wide gain range. In addition to the tone control, it features a Bass control—unlike the Boss Blues Driver—allowing for further tweaking of the circuit. All Tone Models are sampled at various control settings, as documented in the description, covering virtually the entire spectrum of what this pedal can do.
