The Slightly Technical ToneX captures are tone models of gear from my personal collection. These amplifiers and pedals are not commercially available and are either original designs, designs inspired by famous units, or uniquely modified pieces of equipment. Each piece of gear was crafted with carefully selected components, meticulously measured, and calibrated to achieve the desired tonal qualities.
The Big Muffin is my take on an EHX Big Muff circuit that I favored about 10 years ago. It has been designed with carefully selected transistors and modified biasing for a very dynamic feel. This Muff circuit likely has slightly less gain compared to some other Big Muffs.
In addition, there is a three-position switch that toggles between three voicings: 70s, 90s, and Modern. The 70s voicing offers a scooped EQ reminiscent of the 70s Muffs, while the 90s voicing resembles the Russian-made Big Muffs of the 90s, providing a very thick low-midrange. The Modern voicing is something I designed to contrast the other two, offering more “bite” in the higher mids.
Even though Big Muffs come in various forms and shapes, this one is a phenomenal representation of the circuit with excellent variations.
This collection includes 12 different Tone Models. The circuit has been captured in detail at various levels of gain and tone settings. The pack provides four captures for each of the three voice positions, offering a wide variety of sounds to choose from.
Muffs have been used in different ways and with different amplifiers, so it is crucial to have captures at various tone control settings, as this control offers a very wide range.
